want solid advice on the difference between a triplex pump vs axial pump,
you’ve come to the right page. I share my pro experience to explain the
differences and I also review the best replacement pumps for each type.
Or you can check out my #1 top recommended replacement pump: the Generac 3,000 PSI universal replacement pump that works on ALL pressure washer brands & is available on Amazon.
Triplex pumps got their name from their three plungers or pistons that pump pressure into the water. You’ll usually find triplex pumps on commercial or heavy-duty gas pressure washers because pro’s need & demand powerful, reliable and long lasting pumps. They can’t afford breakdowns on a job.
Triplex pumps provide the highest PSI (Pounds per Square Inch) of any pressure washer pumps. The more PSI, the faster you’ll clean.
pumps are manufactured with high quality metals, like brass, copper, etc. And
heat tolerant ceramics. And triplex pumps last much longer than the popular
axial cam pumps that you’ll see on medium & light duty gas pressure
washers. But, unfortunately, triplex
pumps have a higher price tag than axial cam pumps. My pro tip is that if
you’re planning on using your pressure washer more than 40 hours a year, a
triplex pump is probably a good choice for you.
Quick Review of the Best Replacement Pumps
Axial cam pumps are the most popular type of pump found on gas pressure washers. They are direct drive pups and they connect directly to your pressure washer engine. And they’re called direct drive because the pistons move at the same speed as your pressure washer engine. They’re popular because they’re economical, weigh less and are reliable. Axial cam pumps are priced right because they have fewer & lighter parts.
you won’t get the same PSI ratings a triplex pump will give you, but axial
models usually provide anywhere from 2,500 to 3,100 PSI. That’s more than
enough PSI cleaning power to tackle any average homeowner project! My advice is
that if you’re using your pressure washer less than 40 hours a year, you’ll
want to choose an axial pump.
If you’re replacing a triplex or axial cam pump, I want to remind you that you don’t have to choose the same brand. For instance, if you have a Comet axial pump, you don’t have to replace it with another Comet axial pump. You can choose another axial pump brand!
BUT, you need to always match up your current pumps PSI (Pounds per Square Inch) or GPM (Gallons per Minute) to your replacement pumps specs.
And don’t forget to check your current pump mounting style – vertical or horizontal. Your replacement pump must have the same mounting style as your existing pump.
That’s my detailed explanation of the difference
between a triplex pump vs axial pump!
